Though the plot — which shouldn’t take more than six or so hours — might be lost on some people who don’t choose to explore, Home Sweet Home actually offers a surprisingly deep amount of backstory. The game takes the time to explain the lore that comes into play through environmental storytelling. Of particular interest and importance is the legend of the haunting “Preta”, a restless and vengeful spirit that is forever hungry and thirsty. The entire game is steeped in Thai imagery, from the newspaper clippings to the graffiti on the walls, and the unique setting adds to the sense of displacement and disorientation for western players. Home Sweet Home is a great PSVR game and a good regular title. The mystery surrounding the story and unique set pieces mix incredibly well with superb horror elements.
It should also be noted that though it is being promoted and sold as a PS VR game, Home Sweet Home can be played perfectly well outside of VR. And the first antagonist that player encounters in that frustrating opening is a classic horror villain for the ages, right up there with terrifying film villains like Sadaku from Ringu and Kayaku from Ju-On. This is a creation that is horrifying in its relentless pursuit of Tim, and its lamenting moans are utterly bone chilling.
Home Sweet Home Review – House of Horrors (PS4/PSVR)
Similar to the Amnesia game series, the player must rely on both stealth and running to escape the horrors attached to your back. Similar mechanics also accompany Home Sweet Home and allow players to hide, run, and defend if caught. If you can, imagine hiding in a dark cupboard or locker whilst listening to your own breathing, then you hear the slow slide of a Stanley Knife opening and retracting, yeah, have fun with that thought. Headset on and lights off, I loaded the game and prepared for the worst. The first thing I noticed about Home Sweet Home is the crisp, photo-realistic look of the game, very P.T.
Moreover, few puzzles are added into the game, making gameplay more various. However, where the visuals were not that great for VR mode, the sound design was fantastic. This was the standout part of the game, the audio design is perfect to build that Asian horror atmosphere and the level of horror high.

The shadows which cast over the blood soaked walls projected from the bright florescent lights, add an element of terror that really works against a modern setting, which in my view creates a far more scarier atmosphere. After a long night filled with mourning and sorrow over the recent disappearance of his wife, protagonist Tim awakens to find himself in a strange, dilapidated building instead of the comfort of his own home. The movie features mock commercials during its introduction to create the sensation of channel surfing during the middle of the night when you just happen to stumble upon this delirious midnight madness. Afterlife VR is a deeply immersive horror game that will let you experience the true essence of terror. Maybe you’ll get it right away, but more than likely you won’t, and that sets the stage for a lot of the Home Sweet Home experience. It’s full of trial and error, mess up once and you’re reloading from the last checkpoint stealth or pseudo-action sequences. And being such a dark and murky game, sometimes you’ll just bumble into a reload situation because it’s hard to see what you’re even supposed to do. When it comes to the world of VR, the number one key to any title is the immersion factor, and Home Sweet Home actually manages to accomplish that thanks to its incredible sound design. Not only is sound so important for a virtual reality game, it’s probably the most important factor in any horror experience. You need things like ambient noises, growls, or simple things like footsteps and silence to feel a certain way in order to draw you in for when the big scares occur.
Home Sweet Home also caters for the VR enthusiasts, though unfortunately, we Xbox fans have yet to dive into the world of VR. That said, the game will allow other console and PC users to enjoy the game in other ways and I can only imagine how horrific this game will be in Virtual Reality. The excellent horror elements are brought straight to you, and the ability to lean or duck made me check every dark corner. This caused my eyes to dart around at the slightest of sounds, to the point where I could only play half of my five hour playtime in the headset.
